What does Exodus 22:29 mean?

God is calling the Israelites to give generously and promptly, not to hoard or delay when blessings come their way. The firstfruits of harvest and wine were to be offered without hesitation, reflecting gratitude and trust that God would provide. When it mentions giving the firstborn son, the historical context matters here: this refers to dedication to God's service, not literal sacrifice (that prohibition comes elsewhere in Scripture). The deeper principle is that what we have first and what we value most, we're invited to honor God with, recognizing that everything flows from God's generosity to us.
