“for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin. What would he sleep in? It will happen, when he cries to me, that I will hear, for I am gracious.”
What does Exodus 22:27 mean?
When someone was so poor that their cloak was their only blanket, taking it as collateral for a debt would leave them with nothing to sleep under at night. This law protected the most vulnerable by requiring creditors to return such essential clothing by sunset. The passage then shifts to God's own heart: he hears the cries of those who are desperate and stripped of dignity, not because they've earned it through good behavior, but simply because he is gracious.
