What does Exodus 22:23 mean?

God is making a fierce promise here about protecting the vulnerable, particularly widows and orphans mentioned in the surrounding verses. He's saying that if anyone exploits or harms those who have no one else to defend them, their cries will reach him directly, and he will respond with certainty. There's no ambiguity in his commitment, no matter how powerless the person may seem in human society. This speaks to something deeply true about God's character: he pays attention to the people everyone else overlooks, and he takes their suffering personally. If you're someone carrying hurt from being taken advantage of, this verse affirms that God actually hears you, and your pain matters to him in a way that demands his attention.
