“If it is torn in pieces, let him bring it for evidence. He shall not make good that which was torn.”
What does Exodus 22:13 mean?
When a shepherd was hired to care for someone else's flock, this law protected him from being falsely blamed for loss. If a wild animal attacked and killed a sheep, the shepherd could bring the torn remains as proof of what happened, and he wouldn't be forced to pay for the animal. The law recognized that some things are genuinely beyond a person's control, no matter how carefully they do their job. This speaks to something many of us need to hear: you're not responsible for outcomes you couldn't prevent. If you've acted faithfully and something breaks despite your best efforts, that's not a failure you need to compensate for endlessly. The law shows God's understanding that life includes real dangers and real limits to what we can control.
