What does Exodus 21:18 mean?
When people get into a fight and one person injures the other seriously enough that they end up bedridden (but survive), the injured person wasn't simply left to suffer alone and unpaid. The next verse clarifies that the one who struck them had to cover all medical costs and compensate them for lost time and wages until they fully recovered. This law protected vulnerable people from being abandoned after being hurt, and it made wrongdoers accountable for the real damage they caused. It reflects a principle that injuries matter, that healing takes time and resources, and that those who harm others shouldn't profit while their victims struggle to recover.
