Exodus 19:18

All of Mount Sinai smoked, because Yahweh descended on it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly.

What does Exodus 19:18 mean?

When God came down to Mount Sinai to give His law to Moses and the people, His presence was so powerful and holy that the entire mountain convulsed with earthquake and was engulfed in smoke and fire. The description isn't poetic exaggeration, it's trying to capture something almost beyond words, the way human senses might struggle to comprehend a divine encounter. This moment marked one of the most pivotal meetings between God and humanity in Scripture, when God made a covenant with His people and gave them the Ten Commandments. The overwhelming physical signs, the shaking and fire and smoke, communicated that what was happening was infinitely serious and sacred, not something to approach casually or without reverence.
