Exodus 18:22

Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you.

What does Exodus 18:22 mean?

Moses' father-in-law Jethro noticed that Moses was wearing himself out by personally handling every single dispute and decision for the entire Israelite community. He suggested a practical solution: appoint trustworthy people to handle the routine cases, bringing only the most serious matters to Moses. This wasn't about Moses being lazy or stepping back from leadership, but about wise delegation so he could focus on the biggest decisions while empowering others to serve their people too. The principle still speaks today: when we try to carry everything ourselves, we exhaust ourselves and actually rob others of the chance to grow and contribute their gifts.
