What does Exodus 18:16 mean?
Moses is describing his role as the sole judge and teacher for all of Israel, handling every dispute and legal question that arose among the people. His father-in-law Jethro had just watched Moses work from morning until evening, exhausted from the constant stream of people bringing their conflicts to him. What Moses saw as his duty—being available to everyone and ensuring they understood God's laws—was actually unsustainable and, as Jethro gently points out, unnecessary. This moment sets up one of Scripture's earliest lessons about delegation and wise leadership: no single person, no matter how capable or devoted, can shoulder everything alone. Sometimes the most faithful thing we can do is recognize our limits and trust others to help carry the load.
