“But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side. His hands were steady until sunset.”
What does Exodus 17:12 mean?
When Moses held up his staff to help Israel win a battle against the Amalekites, his arms grew exhausted. Rather than let him fail alone, Aaron and Hur recognized what he needed and physically supported him, holding his arms up on either side until the fighting ended at sunset. This beautiful image shows how God's work sometimes requires community, not individual heroics, and how those around us can literally help us bear the weight when we're running on empty. It's a reminder that asking for help isn't weakness, and that being the person who notices someone's struggle and steps in to hold them up is sacred work too. Many of us are carrying heavy things right now, whether visible to others or not. The passage invites us to both receive support when we need it and to be the Aaron or Hur for someone else.
