“Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day is the Sabbath. In it there shall be none.””
What does Exodus 16:26 mean?
God is reminding the Israelites about the rhythm he's established for them in the wilderness. For six days, they can gather the manna (the miraculous bread God provides), but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be no manna to collect. This isn't punishment, it's an invitation to trust and rest, since they'll need to gather extra on day six to have enough for the Sabbath. The pattern teaches something deeper than just meal planning: that God provides enough, that we're meant to stop and rest regularly, and that faith means not constantly working to secure our own needs. In the context of ancient Israel wandering in the desert with no natural food source, this weekly rhythm of trust and rest would have been radical and deeply formative for their relationship with God.
