Exodus 15:17
“You shall bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of your inheritance, the place, Yahweh, which you have made for yourself to dwell in; the sanctuary, Lord, which your hands have established.”
What does Exodus 15:17 mean?
Moses sang these words after watching God part the Red Sea, and they capture what the Israelites believed they were moving toward: a permanent home where God would dwell among them. The "mountain of your inheritance" refers to the land of Canaan and specifically Mount Zion in Jerusalem, where the temple would eventually be built. There's a beautiful confidence here, even in the wilderness, that God has already prepared and claimed a place for his people. What makes this meaningful is the shift from deliverance to destination. Being rescued from Egypt was crucial, but Moses reminds the people that God's intention goes deeper: to establish them in a holy place where they can worship him freely and he can be present with them. For anyone who's been through a hard season, there's something comforting in remembering that difficult chapters aren't the end of the story. God's planning extends beyond survival to belonging, to a place where we can truly rest and encounter him.
