Exodus 14:4
“I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will follow after them; and I will get honor over Pharaoh, and over all his armies; and the Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh.” They did so.”
What does Exodus 14:4 mean?
God is declaring that he will allow Pharaoh's resistance to harden rather than soften, so that when the plagues culminate in Israel's escape, God's power will be undeniable to everyone witnessing it. It's less about God forcing stubbornness onto Pharaoh and more about God permitting the consequences of Pharaoh's own choices to play out fully, so that his deliverance of Israel becomes unmistakably his work. When Pharaoh pursues the fleeing Israelites only to face the parted sea, the demonstration of God's authority will be impossible to deny, even for Egypt's enemies. For those of us facing our own struggles, this reminds us that God isn't hiding his power or working in secret, but invites us to witness what he can do when we trust him, even when the obstacles look impossible.
