Exodus 13:12
“that you shall set apart to Yahweh all that opens the womb, and every firstborn that comes from an animal which you have. The males shall be Yahweh’s.”
What does Exodus 13:12 mean?
This command comes after God freed the Israelites from Egypt, and it's connected to a painful event: the death of Egypt's firstborn sons. The Israelites are now instructed to dedicate their own firstborns to God, both human and animal, as a way of acknowledging that their lives were spared and belong to him. In practice, this didn't mean sacrificing human children (a later law clarified they could be redeemed with a payment instead). For animals, the firstborn males were set apart for sacrifice or service in the temple. It was a way of saying "everything I have comes from God, and I recognize his claim on the best of what I receive." For those of us reading this today, the deeper principle might resonate: what would it mean to truly honor God with the first and best of what we're given, rather than offering him what's left over? It's less about following an ancient ritual and more about where our deepest gratitude and loyalty actually lie.
