“Your lamb shall be without defect, a male a year old. You shall take it from the sheep, or from the goats:”
What does Exodus 12:5 mean?
The Passover lamb had to meet specific standards: it needed to be healthy and whole, in its prime at one year old, and chosen from animals the Israelites already owned. This wasn't arbitrary detail. A perfect sacrifice reflected the seriousness of what God was about to do, sparing the firstborn of those who trusted him while judgement fell on Egypt. It also meant families had to give something that actually mattered to them, not just grab whatever was convenient. The act of selecting and preparing the lamb over several days would have given each household time to focus on what God was asking them to do and to ready themselves spiritually for the night ahead.
