Exodus 12:45
“A foreigner and a hired servant shall not eat of it.”
What does Exodus 12:45 mean?
In the Passover meal, only those who fully belonged to the household—those who had committed themselves to God's deliverance—could participate. A temporary worker or outsider wouldn't have the same stake in the story being remembered, and practically speaking, the meal was meant to bind together those under one roof who were about to flee Egypt together. This detail actually makes the next verse more striking: anyone who wanted to join in the Passover could, but they had to be fully incorporated into the household first (circumcised males, committed to staying). The boundary here wasn't about ethnicity or permanent status—it was about genuine belonging and participation in what God was about to do.
