“There shall be no yeast found in your houses for seven days, for whoever eats that which is leavened, that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a foreigner, or one who is born in the land.”
What does Exodus 12:19 mean?
During Passover, God commanded the Israelites to remove all yeast from their homes for a week, turning this into a concrete way to remember their sudden escape from Egypt (they didn't even have time for bread to rise). The harsh language about being "cut off" reflects how seriously this was taken in ancient Israel's community life, though it ultimately meant exclusion from the festival celebration rather than something more severe.
