““‘Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread; even the first day you shall put away yeast out of your houses, for whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.”
What does Exodus 12:15 mean?
During Passover, the Israelites were instructed to remove all yeast from their homes and eat only unleavened bread for a full week. This wasn't arbitrary: yeast represented corruption and the old ways of slavery, while unleavened bread symbolized a clean break with their past and readiness to start fresh as a freed people. The severity of the warning ("cut off from Israel") shows how important this practice was to maintaining their community identity and their collective memory of God's deliverance. For us today, whether or not we observe Passover, this invites reflection on what we might need to remove from our lives to make space for new growth and what it means to genuinely leave old patterns behind, not just in token gestures but in real, sustained ways.
