What does Esther 9:26 mean?
The festival of Purim gets its name from "pur," which means "lot" in Persian, because Haman had cast lots to determine when he'd destroy the Jewish people. Instead of becoming their destruction, that random casting of lots became the occasion for their remarkable deliverance and salvation. The verse captures how the Jewish people commemorated what happened to them, turning a day that was meant to bring death into one celebrating life and God's protection. When we remember this story, we're reminded that what looks like chance or coincidence in our own lives might be God working in ways we don't immediately see.
