What does Esther 6:7 mean?

Haman, the king's chief official, is so full of pride that he assumes the honor being asked about must be for himself. He answers eagerly, describing elaborate ways to celebrate someone important, never imagining the king is actually asking how to honor Mordecai, the Jewish man who recently uncovered a plot against the king's life. This moment captures a beautiful irony: Haman's own words end up describing the very honor that will be given to his enemy, and his arrogance blinds him to what's really happening. It's a gentle reminder of how our assumptions and self-centeredness can keep us from seeing what's actually in front of us.
