What does Esther 4:2 mean?
Mordecai is grieving the decree that will destroy his people, the Jews, so he's dressed in sackcloth, a rough fabric that signaled deep mourning and distress in ancient times. He can only go as far as the palace gates because the king has a rule: no one in mourning clothes is permitted to enter his presence. It's a poignant detail that shows how Mordecai's anguish keeps him from reaching the king, even though he desperately needs to. Sometimes when we're in our darkest moments, the very barriers we face can feel like they prevent us from finding help, yet this story shows God working even when we're stuck outside looking in.
