What does Esther 1:4 mean?

King Xerxes of Persia threw an enormous party that lasted nearly half a year, basically using it as a chance to show off his wealth and power to all the important people in his kingdom. It was less about hospitality and more about making sure everyone understood just how magnificent and in control he was. This kind of extravagant display was common among ancient rulers, a way of reinforcing their authority through spectacle. The length and lavishness of the celebration sets the stage for what comes next in Esther's story, showing us a king accustomed to getting exactly what he wants.
