What does Esther 1:18 mean?

In this moment, the king's advisors are warning him that Queen Vashti's refusal to obey him will ripple far beyond the palace. When powerful women hear that a queen got away with defying her husband, they reason, it will embolden princesses and noblewomen throughout the empire to question their own husbands' authority. The advisors are appealing to the king's fear that his power—and by extension, every man's power in the kingdom—is at stake. Their concern reveals how fragile they believed male authority to be, needing to be defended through public punishment. It's a reminder that sometimes the people around us amplify our worst impulses by making us afraid of looking weak.
