What does Ephesians 6:2 mean?
This is one of the Ten Commandments, and Paul is highlighting something remarkable about it: it's the only one that comes with a specific promise attached. When you honor your parents, the original promise was that you would live long in the land God was giving Israel, but more broadly, it speaks to the blessing that naturally follows from respecting those who came before us. The instruction itself applies across cultures and ages because family relationships form the foundation of how we learn to treat all authority and one another. For some of us, this feels straightforward and joyful, while for others, honoring difficult or painful parents requires real grace and perhaps redefining what honor means (it doesn't mean pretending harm didn't happen, but rather choosing respect for their humanity and role, however imperfectly they filled it). Either way, Paul is saying this commitment matters enough that God himself attached a promise to it.
