What does Ephesians 5:29 mean?

Paul makes a simple but profound observation here: nobody naturally hates themselves or neglects their own body. We instinctively feed ourselves, rest when tired, and care for our health because self-preservation is built into us. He uses this everyday truth as a window into how Christ treats the church, his body. Just as you wouldn't deprive yourself of food or rest, Christ nourishes and cherishes those who follow him, meeting our deepest needs with intentional care. This matters especially if you're feeling unseen or neglected by God. The verse invites you to understand that your wellbeing actually matters to him in a tangible, consistent way. He doesn't regard you as a burden to tolerate but as someone worth sustaining and protecting, the way anyone protects what they love most.
