What does Ephesians 5:17 mean?

Paul is calling us to take our spiritual lives seriously rather than drift through them thoughtlessly. "Understanding the will of the Lord" doesn't mean you need to hear an audible voice or have everything mapped out, but rather that you're genuinely seeking God's direction through prayer, Scripture, and wise counsel instead of just doing whatever feels easiest in the moment. The contrast between foolishness and understanding here is about intention. A foolish person ignores what God values and goes their own way, while a wise person pays attention to how Jesus lived and what the Bible reveals about what matters to God. If you're wrestling with a big decision or feeling lost about your direction, this verse is an invitation to slow down and ask God to show you what he cares about, trusting that he wants to guide you more than you want to be guided.
