Ephesians 5:11
“Have no fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even reprove them.”
What does Ephesians 5:11 mean?
Paul is calling us to distance ourselves from actions and attitudes that harm people and pull us away from goodness, and to gently call them out when we encounter them. "Unfruitful deeds of darkness" describes choices that destroy rather than build up, that hide truth rather than reveal it. This isn't a call to judge people harshly or cut off relationships with everyone who stumbles, but rather an invitation to live with clear values and to speak up when we see real harm happening around us. The passage recognizes that staying silent about wrongdoing can make us complicit in it. At the same time, "reprove" suggests correction done with care, not contempt. It's the difference between walking away from cruelty while saying nothing, and walking away while gently naming what you saw as wrong. This takes courage, especially when the people involved are those we care about.
