What does Ephesians 2:20 mean?

The church is described here as a building with a secure foundation, and that foundation rests on the teachings of the apostles and prophets who came before us. Jesus himself is the chief cornerstone, the most important stone that holds the entire structure together and keeps it aligned. This means that everything the church is and does flows from Christ at the center, with the apostolic witness supporting and pointing back to him. It's a comforting image for anyone who's ever wondered if faith has a solid ground to stand on: yes, it does, and that ground is Jesus and the faithful testimony of those who knew him and spoke for God.
