What does Ephesians 2:1 mean?
Paul is reminding the Ephesians of a spiritual reality they may have forgotten: before they encountered Christ, they were spiritually lifeless, trapped in patterns of wrongdoing and rebellion against God. "Dead" here doesn't mean physically dead, but spiritually separated from God, going through the motions of life without real connection to what matters most. What makes this powerful is that Paul pairs this honest diagnosis with an implied promise: the word "made alive" (which continues into verse 2) points to resurrection and restoration. He's saying you were stuck, but something changed. If you're reading this in a season where you feel disconnected from God or weighed down by past mistakes, Paul wants you to know that spiritual deadness isn't your permanent condition.
