What does Ephesians 1:7 mean?
Jesus' death accomplished something real and costly on our behalf. The language of redemption and blood points to the ancient practice of paying a price to free someone from slavery, suggesting that sin had a grip on us we couldn't break ourselves. Through what Christ did, we're released from that bondage and forgiven, not because we deserved it or earned it, but purely because of God's overwhelming generosity. The phrase "riches of his grace" emphasizes that this forgiveness isn't measured out stingily or conditionally, but flows toward us in abundance.
