Ecclesiastes 8:16

When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on the earth (for also there is that neither day nor night sees sleep with his eyes),

What does Ecclesiastes 8:16 mean?

The writer of Ecclesiastes is describing his attempt to understand life by observing everything happening around him. He's so committed to this quest for wisdom that he's willing to stay awake and exhausted, watching human activity constantly, day and night. What he's really capturing is that feeling of desperately wanting to figure out how the world works and why people do what they do. This honest admission sets up the realization he'll come to: that no amount of observation or sleepless effort can fully explain the meaning behind it all, because there's so much we simply cannot control or completely understand.
