“Don’t be hasty in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.”
What does Ecclesiastes 7:9 mean?
When we're hurt or frustrated, our first instinct is often to react immediately, and anger feels justified in that moment. But the writer of Ecclesiastes is gently suggesting that quick anger usually doesn't reflect our best thinking, and holding onto it only weighs us down. Anger itself isn't condemned here, but rather the impulsive rush to it and the way we nurse it afterward, letting it settle into our hearts like an unwelcome guest. There's wisdom in pausing before we react, even for just a few breaths. That pause gives us room to remember what we actually value and what will actually help the situation. The verse isn't saying we should never be angry, but that we serve ourselves and others better when we let our calmer, wiser self have a say.
