What does Ecclesiastes 7:5 mean?
It's hard to listen to criticism, even when it's fair and kindly given. But the writer of Ecclesiastes is saying that sitting in a room where people flatter you and tell you what you want to hear—while you're making poor choices—is actually far worse. Wise correction, though uncomfortable in the moment, points you toward something better, while endless validation from people who don't really care about your wellbeing just lets you drift further astray. This speaks to something many of us feel: we know deep down that the people who genuinely love us are sometimes the ones willing to say hard things, not the ones who smile and say everything is fine.
