Ecclesiastes 6:9
“Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.”
What does Ecclesiastes 6:9 mean?
The writer is saying something simple but profound: it's better to actually enjoy what's in front of you than to spend your life chasing after things you don't have. When you're present with what you can see and experience right now, you find more real satisfaction than when your mind is always reaching for the next thing, the better thing, the thing just out of reach. But here's the twist in the second sentence: even this contentment, even this wisdom about being present, doesn't ultimately fix the emptiness the writer keeps circling back to. He's not saying "be grateful and you'll find meaning." He's saying that even good moments and wise choices get swallowed up in the larger sense that life without God at the center feels hollow and purposeless. It's all still "chasing after wind" in the end, unless there's something deeper anchoring it all.
