Ecclesiastes 6:4
“for it comes in vanity, and departs in darkness, and its name is covered with darkness.”
What does Ecclesiastes 6:4 mean?
When someone is born, they enter a world of emptiness and struggle, and when they die, they leave it the same way, with their memory fading into obscurity. The writer of Ecclesiastes is wrestling with how little we ultimately control or retain in life, no matter how much we achieve or accumulate. Nothing we build, earn, or become seems to matter in the long run when we face our own mortality and the indifference of time. It's a sobering observation, meant to shake us loose from the illusion that success or status can give our lives final meaning.
