“When goods increase, those who eat them are increased; and what advantage is there to its owner, except to feast on them with his eyes?”
What does Ecclesiastes 5:11 mean?
This is a gentle observation about the emptiness of accumulation. When you gain more wealth, it tends to attract more people who want to share in it, eat from your table, or depend on you. Yet for all that increase, what does the owner actually gain beyond simply looking at what they own? The writer is pointing out that possessions don't deliver the satisfaction we think they will, and more stuff often just means more complications and obligations, not more genuine contentment. It's a reminder worth sitting with if you find yourself chasing the next thing, thinking it will finally make you happy.
