Ecclesiastes 5:1
“Guard your steps when you go to God’s house; for to draw near to listen is better than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they don’t know that they do evil.”
What does Ecclesiastes 5:1 mean?
When we approach God, whether in prayer, worship, or service, we're invited to come thoughtfully and with genuine intention. The writer of Ecclesiastes is saying that showing up with a careful, honest heart matters far more than going through the motions or performing religious acts without real understanding. A person who listens, reflects, and seeks to truly connect with God is doing something far more valuable than someone who gives generously or performs all the right external actions while their heart is elsewhere or their mind is closed. This speaks to all of us: God cares less about the perfection of what we do than about the sincerity of who we are when we do it.
