What does Ecclesiastes 4:7 mean?

The writer of Ecclesiastes is reflecting on what he's observed about life after much searching and thinking. He keeps coming back to a troubling pattern: so much of what we chase and achieve, no matter how impressive it looks, ultimately feels empty and pointless. This repetition of "vanity under the sun" is his honest conclusion that without something deeper to anchor our lives, all our effort and accumulation leave us feeling hollow. It's not meant to make you despair, but rather to gently ask you what you're really building your life on and whether it's something that will actually satisfy your soul.
