What does Ecclesiastes 3:13 mean?

There's something liberating in this ancient observation: taking pleasure in your daily work, your meals, your life as it unfolds, isn't frivolous or self-indulgent, it's actually a gift from God. The writer of Ecclesiastes is saying that when you can find satisfaction in what your hands have made or the efforts you've invested, that capacity for enjoyment itself is something to receive with gratitude. This matters especially if you've absorbed the idea that spiritual maturity means denying yourself or that good living is only about striving for something distant. Sometimes the point is simply to notice the good that's already present in an ordinary day: nourishment, accomplishment, rest. That ability to recognize and receive it, rather than constantly chasing or worrying, comes from God's hand.
