Ecclesiastes 2:11
“Then I looked at all the works that my hands had worked, and at the labor that I had labored to do; and behold, all was vanity and a chasing after wind, and there was no profit under the sun.”
What does Ecclesiastes 2:11 mean?
The writer of Ecclesiastes has just described building houses, planting vineyards, accumulating wealth and possessions, and pursuing every pleasure imaginable. Now he steps back and surveys it all, and the realization hits him: none of it ultimately matters or brings lasting satisfaction. He calls this "chasing after wind" because no matter how hard you grasp, you can't hold onto it. This isn't cynicism telling you that life is pointless. Rather, it's honest reflection about where we look for meaning. When we pour all our energy into accumulating things, gaining status, or chasing pleasures, we're building on a foundation that won't hold. The author learned through experience that fulfillment doesn't come from what we own or accomplish by our own effort.
