Ecclesiastes 11:9
“Rejoice, young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.”
What does Ecclesiastes 11:9 mean?
Youth is a gift meant to be enjoyed, and this verse invites young people to experience joy, pursue their passions, and follow where their hearts lead them. There's a real permission here to live fully and feel deeply during those vibrant years. But the passage adds something crucial at the end: this freedom isn't ultimate or consequence-free. God sees everything we do and will hold us accountable for our choices, including how we use the energy and possibilities of youth. It's not a threat so much as a reality check, reminding us that joy without wisdom, or freedom without responsibility, eventually catches up with us. The writer of Ecclesiastes seems to be saying: live fully, yes, but live thoughtfully, knowing that the choices we make when we're young shape who we become.
