What does Ecclesiastes 1:4 mean?
The Teacher who wrote Ecclesiastes is reflecting on what lasts and what doesn't, and he notices something sobering: people come and go like waves, but the earth just keeps on turning. We pour ourselves into building things, making names, and leaving our mark, yet the ground beneath our feet will be here long after we're gone. This isn't meant to crush you, though it can feel that way at first. Instead, it's an invitation to step back from the frantic scramble for permanent significance and notice what actually matters. Our lives are real and meaningful even though they're temporary, and perhaps that's the point. We get to live them fully, love the people in front of us, and trust that our brief time here counts for something beyond what we can measure or control.
