Ecclesiastes 1:13

I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

What does Ecclesiastes 1:13 mean?

The Teacher (likely King Solomon) is describing his ambitious search to understand everything about life through study and reason. He discovered that this pursuit, while valuable, carries a weight with it, like an exhausting burden placed on human shoulders. There's honest acknowledgment here that seeking wisdom and grappling with life's big questions isn't always uplifting, especially when you start noticing how much suffering and futility exist in the world. The verse captures that real tension many of us feel: the ache that comes with thinking deeply about existence, mortality, and meaning.
