Deuteronomy 9:7
“Remember, and don’t forget, how you provoked Yahweh your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that you left the land of Egypt, until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Yahweh.”
What does Deuteronomy 9:7 mean?
Moses is reminding the Israelites of their repeated failures during forty years of wandering in the desert, right before they're about to enter the promised land. This wasn't a gentle suggestion to reflect, but a serious call to remember that they survived and reached this moment not because they deserved it, but because God remained faithful despite their constant complaining, idolatry, and disobedience. The repetition ("remember, and don't forget") shows how easily people slip into thinking they've earned God's blessing through their own goodness, when the truth is far humbler. By looking back honestly at their own rebellion, the Israelites were being prepared to enter their new land with gratitude and a realistic understanding of who really deserves credit for their freedom.
