Deuteronomy 7:4
“For he will turn away your son from following me, that they may serve other gods. So Yahweh’s anger would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you quickly.”
What does Deuteronomy 7:4 mean?
Moses is warning the Israelites against marrying people from surrounding nations who worship different gods. He's saying that when you build a life with someone whose deepest values and spiritual commitments run in another direction, your children naturally follow that influence, and you end up drifting from God yourself. The real concern isn't judgment for judgment's sake, but the natural consequence of divided loyalty. When the family's foundation doesn't share the same faith, that faith gets weakened and eventually lost. God's "anger" here describes what happens when people abandon the relationship that sustains them, similar to how a parent grieves when a child walks away from home into danger. The warning is rooted in love, not cruelty, even though it sounds stern to modern ears.
