Deuteronomy 6:15
“for Yahweh your God among you is a jealous God; lest the anger of Yahweh your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.”
What does Deuteronomy 6:15 mean?
God's jealousy here isn't petty or insecure, but rather the passionate protection of a relationship he treasures. When he warns against worshiping other gods, he's not being controlling for its own sake, but expressing how seriously he takes his covenant love for his people and how real the consequences are when we turn away from what sustains us spiritually. This warning comes after Moses reminds Israel of God's commands to love him completely and teach their children about his character. The stakes matter because abandoning the God who freed them and cares for them would genuinely harm them, just as turning to false gods and the practices surrounding them would. It's less about divine punishment for wounded pride and more about the natural destructive power of replacing what's real and life-giving with what's empty.
