What does Deuteronomy 5:23 mean?

Moses is reminding the people of a terrifying moment they all witnessed together: God's voice thundering from the darkness and fire on Mount Sinai. In their fear and awe, the tribal leaders and elders came close to Moses, seeking reassurance and guidance from him as their intermediary. This verse captures how profound and overwhelming a direct encounter with God's presence felt to the people, and how that shared experience bound them together as a community. It's a tender reminder that even when we're afraid or uncertain, we naturally turn toward trusted leaders and each other for comfort and understanding.
