Deuteronomy 4:24

What does Deuteronomy 4:24 mean?
God's intensity and commitment to his people is being described here through the image of fire, which both protects and consumes. This isn't about God being angry in a petty way, but rather about his absolute seriousness regarding his covenant promises and his refusal to share your ultimate allegiance with anything false or harmful. The "jealousy" Moses speaks of reflects a devoted love, similar to how someone might fiercely protect a marriage or family. God takes seriously the spiritual welfare of those he's called into relationship with him, and he won't stand by while his people chase after idols or turn away from what actually sustains them. For those of us going through doubt or searching for what really matters, this can be oddly comforting: we're dealing with a God who cares enough to intervene, not one who's indifferent to our choices.
