What does Deuteronomy 34:2 mean?
Moses stands at the end of his life looking out over the promised land, and God shows him the full scope of what he'd led his people toward during forty years in the wilderness. This verse catalogs the northern and central territories that would become Israel, stretching from Naphtali in the far north down through the heartland, all the way to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. It's both a geographic inventory and a deeply human moment, because Moses himself won't cross over to inhabit any of it. The view represents completion of a promise made generations earlier to Abraham, even though Moses must let go and trust the next generation to possess what he can only see from a distance.
