What does Deuteronomy 33:18 mean?
When Moses blesses the tribes of Israel before his death, he speaks over Zebulun and Issachar in contrasting ways that reflect their different callings. Zebulun was a coastal tribe known for maritime trade and travel, so "rejoice in your going out" celebrates their adventurous, outward-focused life on the roads and seas. Issachar, by contrast, was an inland tribe that found their prosperity and purpose in settled work: farming, learning, and building stable community life at home. This blessing isn't ranking one life as better than the other—it's saying that God honors both the person who travels and takes risks in the world and the person who finds joy in faithful, rooted work. Whether your calling takes you outward into new places or keeps you grounded in faithful service where you are, there's dignity and blessing in it. Both matter to God's purposes, and both deserve celebration.
