“Die on the mountain where you go up, and be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor, and was gathered to his people;”
What does Deuteronomy 32:50 mean?
Moses is near the end of his life, and God is telling him that he will die on Mount Nebo before entering the promised land. The phrase "gathered to your people" is ancient language for death and being reunited with loved ones who came before—it expresses both the finality of death and a kind of continuity with those you've loved. Moses won't get to see the land he's spent forty years leading his people toward, which is a poignant reminder that sometimes our work extends beyond what we personally achieve. But the reference to Aaron, Moses' own brother who died the same way, suggests there's something peaceful or purposeful about this end, even if it's not the one Moses might have chosen.
